Incumbent Ald. Jason Ervin successfully avoided a contested race in 2015 as every one of the seven candidates running against him were knocked from the ballot. A longtime aide to Ald. Ed Smith — who represented the ward for 27 years — Ervin was appointed, and then elected, to the seat in 2011. The 28th Ward includes all or parts of Austin, East Garfield Park, West Garfield Park, North Lawndale, Little Italy, Little Village, Pilsen, Tri-Taylor, University Village and the West Loop.
Ervin faces three challengers: Miguel Bautista, an IT systems administrator; Jasmine Jackson, a CPS teacher; and Beverly Miles, who works in veterans administration.
To win, candidates must receive more than 50 percent of the vote. If no candidate reaches that threshold, the top two candidates will advance to a run off on April 2.
Percentages are based on the available ballots tallied by the Chicago Board of Elections. Percentages listed do not indicate a winner until all ballots are counted.
