Race for 6th Ward Alderman

Race goes to runoff

The 6th Ward includes all or parts of Chatham, Englewood and West Englewood. The son of once Mayor and Ald. Eugene Sawyer, incumbent Ald. Roderick Sawyer was elected to his father’s seat in 2011. Voters in the ward want to see results — economic development, crumbling infrastructure, and local businesses lacking support are all key concerns. They’ll look to their next alderman to address policing issues, too, as some residents say they’re tired of the wards’ kids being treated like criminals.

Sawyer faces challengers Richard Wooten, a Chicago police officer and pastor who also ran for the seat in 2015, and Deborah Foster-Bonner, an accountant and block club president.

Results

To win, candidates must receive more than 50 percent of the vote. If no candidate reaches that threshold, the top two candidates will advance to a run off on April 2.

Percentages are based on the available ballots tallied by the Chicago Board of Elections. Percentages listed do not indicate a winner until all ballots are counted.
