Race for 8th Ward Alderman

Incumbent reelected

The 8th Ward includes all or parts of Chatham, Burnside, Roseland, Greater Grand Crossing, Roseland and Avalon Park. Ald. Michelle Harris, one of Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s closest allies is running for a fourth term. She faces Faheem Shabazz, who also ran against Harris in 2007, 2011 and 2015, as well as Linda Hudson and Jewel Easterling-Smith. Both Shabazz and Hudson list a lack of transparency among the biggest issues in the ward, while Easterling-Smith would focus on ensuring 8th Ward residents get their fair share of contracts while filling vacant homes and reversing the area’s status as a food desert.

To win, candidates must receive more than 50 percent of the vote. If no candidate reaches that threshold, the top two candidates will advance to a run off on April 2.

Percentages are based on the available ballots tallied by the Chicago Board of Elections. Percentages listed do not indicate a winner until all ballots are counted.
