The 9th Ward includes all or parts of Roseland, Pullman and Altgeld Gardens. Ald. Anthony Beale, a close ally of Mayor Rahm Emanuel, is running for his sixth term against Cleopatra Watson, Essie Hall and Paul Collins. Beale’s challengers said the biggest issues facing the ward are a need for affordable housing, more funding for schools, economic development in the ward’s business district and an end to the area’s status as a food desert. Beale has touted his role in reviving Pullman, which is now a national monument.
To win, candidates must receive more than 50 percent of the vote. If no candidate reaches that threshold, the top two candidates will advance to a run off on April 2.
Percentages are based on the available ballots tallied by the Chicago Board of Elections. Percentages listed do not indicate a winner until all ballots are counted.
