Longtime Ald. Danny Solis — one of the city’s most powerful aldermen — surprised many when he announced late last year that he wouldn’t seek re-election. Then, a bombshell report revealed what Solis had really been up to: he’d secretly wore a wire to help the FBI build a case against embattled Ald. Ed Burke. Solis has been MIA since then. The diverse 25th Ward includes all or parts of Pilsen, the West Loop, Chinatown, the South Loop, Little Italy and McKinley Park.
The candidates running to replace Solis are Alex Acevedo, former pediatric nurse who founded Pilsen’s Neighborhood Watch Coalition and Byron Sigcho Lopez, a University of Illinois at Chicago educator and former executive director of Pilsen Alliance who almost brought Solis to a run off in 2015.
