The 33rd Ward is represented by Ald. Deb Mell and covers Ravenswood Manor, Avondale, Albany Park and Irving Park. The diverse ward has a low crime rate and some thriving business strips, but could use more affordable housing, candidates say. Mell faces Rossana Rodríguez-Sánchez, and both tout similar beliefs: more affordable housing, more funding for public schools and protecting immigrant communities and LGBTQ residents, but Rodríguez-Sánchez has organizational support from the Chicago chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America and other progressive groups..
"It is kind of scary when you realize what's in your water and you're hoping it's not something dangerous," one student said.
With 96.45 percent of precincts reporting, Mell and Rodriguez were tied — each with 41.59 percent of the vote.
Ald. Deb Mell (33rd) is being challenged by Rossana Rodríguez-Sánchez and Katie Sieracki.
