Race for 5th Ward Alderman

Five-term Ald. Leslie Hairston is running for re-election in the 5th Ward, an area that includes all or parts of Hyde Park, South Shore, Greater Grand Crossing, Woodlawn and Jackson Park Highlands. She fended off a crowded field of challengers in 2015, avoiding a run-off. The area is slated to be the future home of the Obama Presidential Library, and accessibility, transparency and lack of economic development in Woodlawn are hot issues in the ward.

Hairston will square off against William Calloway, an activist who helped force the release of the Laquan McDonald shooting video.
